The number of ocean-going vessels using the Panama Canal. waterway during th› fiscal year saded June 30, 1916. was 787, and their aggregsta net t ɔnnage, was 22nd Feb. at 10 am 2,479,76 tons, the corresponding 22nd Feb. at 4pm fures for the provicus fiscal 25th Feb. af d'light year being 1,088 vessels of 3,943.- 25th Feb. at d'light 035 tons. As the canal was 25th Feb. at 10 ao sed by a landside from the 27th Feb at 4 pm middle of Feptember, 1915, to ....28th Feb. at noon. April 15, 916; the period covered

Higher N. Y. K. Freights to Europe.

The Nippon Yusen Kaishi considering raising its freight rates to London, and the rate for reaular and extra ships will be raised this time. The N. Y. K. gives as the reason for this that the present tariffs are far below those of European-owned ships.. Nothing deficite has yet been decided upon as to the scale of the increase, but the "Japan Ad- raitiser" understands, on good authority, that the N. Y. K. will raise the rates about 10 shillings for extra vessels and from 15 to 25 shillings for contract steamers. Even with this increase, the tariffs of the N. Y. K. vessel will be som what below those charzed by most lines. The increase for contract liners must receive the Government's sanction, and, it will be at least April 1 befors such sanction ein bs cbtained. No at Government sanction, however, is required for increasing the rates for extra vessels, and it is aid that increased tarifs will be charted commencing with the Sanuk Maru leaving Kobe early in March..
