No Parley with Germans. The Trade Union Congresa at. ita meeting in Birmingham was recommended by ite Parliamen- tary Committee to accept an in- vitation from the American Federation of Labour to take part in as International Labour

Congress to be held at the tame time and in the same place as the Conference of the belligerent nations which will settle the terms of prace. This recommendation the delegates re- jected by s majority of two to coO. not because they thought that labour was not entitled to exĮT888 ita view on the terms of settle- ment, but because they refused to parley, even at that late stage of the war, with the Socialists of Germany and her allies.

ALCOHOL AND BENZOL,

Interesting to Motorists.

Germany suffers from vary much carisiled importation of petroleom. Even the supplies from Galiois failed to cope with the demand, and eccordingly the authorities were face to face with s serious shortage. The technical department of their transporta- tion service was at once ordered to seek a combustible that would furnish an effective substitute for gasoline. The result was the em- ployment of a mixture of alcohol and benzol; and the practical tenta are anid to have satisfactorily solved the petrol question. Er- periments as to the utility of the compound were worked out with a Mercedes car, 1914 touring model withosrburetter of ordinary type. Burning pure gasoline, & speed of 44 miles an hour W attained, one pïnt of fuel driving the car 3.6 miles.

With pure berzol the speed was 42 miles per hour and the mileage per pint 3.70. The results for various proportions of the mixture were:-
