THE ALLIED OFFENSIVE.
Wonderful German Catacombs at Chilly.
[Beuter's Service to The "Telegraph."] -
October 6, 3.35 p.m. Bouter's correspondent with the French army, describing the wonderful catacombs at Chilly, states that they extended forty feet down and could shelter thousands of troops. Their elaborateness showed that the Germans regarded the place as indispensable as a flanking post for Chaulnes. The main passage underground was in places six feet wide, the walla solidly supported with timber and iroa. Big ventilation Electric light pipes were kept moving by clectric motor.
and bells were installed throughout."
When the French arrived the Bosches were installing a drainage system. The French swept over the whole place
in a single wave, aubeequently inducing those underground to surrender.
A Striking German Admission.
October 6, 3.40 p.m. Beuter's correspondent at British Headquarters quotes passages from a voluminous report by General on Aruin, commanding the Fourth German Army Corps, upon the lessons of the Battle of the Somate.
The report was captured by our troops, and says: The British infantry have learned much since the Autumn offensive. They show great dash in attack and they also have physique and training in their favour.
It was must
striking bow the enemy assembled and brought large bodies into the zone of fire. Moreover, the skill" wherewith the English rapidly consolidated their positions must be acknow- ledged. The Brits infantry show great tenacity in delence, especially in the case of small parties, which are difficult to drive from a corner, wood, or group of houses.
The report also pays high tribute to the methodical and accurate work of the artillery, assisted by well organised nerial observation. The intensity of the British gunfire made the selection of battery positions difficult, and finally it has been founil best to select concealed sites in open couatry.
General vou Arnum explains the necessity of holding the front trenches lightly, with good men and machine guns, sup- ports to be ready as close as possible to the foremost line, to rush up and reinforce it.
He expatiates on, the insufficiency of supplies of muni- tions, transport and food.
A Sharp Artillery Duel.
October 7, 1.00 p.m.
A Paris communique reports a sharp artillery duel ob both banks of the Somme.
There was no infantry action, except a slight advance east of Benehavestus,

Our Front Heavily Shelled.

South of the Anrré the artillery successfully dealt with enemy working parties.
Elsewhere there was nothing to report.
A Quiet Night.
October 7, 4.40 p.m.
A Paris communique says on the Somme the night was comparatively quiet.
A Further Advance.
October 8, 1.10 a.m. General Sir Douglas Haig says: Cleopaating with the French on our night we attacked m the afternool" from the Albert-Bapaume load to Les Borgis and advanced our linë. six hundred to a thousand yards between Gueudecvary and " Les Boutin, We captured the village of Le bars and progress- ed east and west of it,
A Satisfactory British Report.
October 8, 2,05 p. General Sir Douglas Haig says we completely repulsed bombing attacks against our new pusition' portb-cost of Eaucourt L'Abbaye. Othertyng there is nothing impurtant. South of the Ancre we made successful runds in the areas of Loos and Armentieres,
The reports of the number of prisoners taken up to the present Lave not yet been received. Airgalt greatly assisted the infantry. Our aeroplanes, despite bad weather during the past five daye, have done valuable work and have dropped numerous hombs on the enemy,
Line Advanced 1,200||Metres.
October 8, 1.30 am.
A Paris communique says north of the Somme the French infantry, in conjunction with the British, attacked from the front at Morral to Bouchavesnes and briliantly' attained all their objectives. They carried the line forward 1,200 metres north-east of Mõrval. Up toʻthe present 400 prisoners, in- eluding ten allicers, have been counted, together with ten machine guns.
The New French Line.
October 7, 11.00 a.m. A Paris communique says:-The new French line crowns the western slopes of the Sailley-Saillisel Ridge and the whole of the Bapaume Road to two hundred metres from Sailley and skirts the western and south-western fringes of St. Peirre Vaast Wood from whence it continues over Hill 130 to south of Boychavesnes. Great gatherings of eneiny troops reported north of Saillisel were caught by the concentrated fire of our batteries. There were vjolent artillery duels south of the Somme and on the right of the Mouse.
Brillant Successes.
October 8, 10.55 am. According to Reuter's Paris correspondent, a semi-official statement says that yesterday's brilliant successes were tho result of a few hours of the fiercest fighting, The British pra- greased particularly, two wings carrying the hamlet of Le Bars, the Left advancing three-quarter of a mile and the Right in the direction of the låg village of Le Transley, The advanco is strategically valuable, as Le Bars and Le Translay are twa points d'appui "in the enemy's resistance. Both are twelva miles from Bapaume on the roads to Albert and Perone respectively, which form an angle, of which Bapaume is this apex. Sailly-Saillisel is a dominant position which the French are beginning to surround from the west and the south-west.
