GENERAL NEWS.
Sir. W. Hood Treacher. Sir Wm. Hood Trescher, K. C. M. G. who has led, a very busy life in the rabber world since his retirement from the post of Bosi- 'dent General of the Federated Malay States, is resigning several of his directorships. Sir William desires to obtain some leisure, to which his previous labours certainly entitle him, and towards this end is curtailing his work responsibilities. All who know kim or have been associated with him will wish that he may have good health for many years as an socompaniment to the rest he has. earned.--Ezobangs.
Johore Gambling Scandal, If reports which reach un are true there is quite likelihood that the question of the Johore Gambling Farm and its effect up- on the morale of Singapore may be raised in the House of Com- won at an early date after the Teassembling of Parliament, says the Straits Echo. There are may reasons why this is undesirable and we would urge the authorities to take time by the forelock and deal themselves with the matler before it can be brought up at Home. The whole press of the country is unanimous in con- demning the scandal and las expressed its views on the subject with po ascertain voice. That it has led to much crime in Singapore seems to be pretty well established, while the trou- ble, inconvenience and diecom- fort occasioned to respectable people of both sexes travelling by rail to Johore Bahrt is a dis grace to the Railway administra- tion which allows its carriages to be commandeered by the gullible and unimannerly hordee who patronise the Gambling Farmer. A University in Singapore and a Gambling Farm in Jobore Bahru make a nice creditable sort of front and back door arrange": meni.
