The following is the text of a message from Sir Douglas Haig:-We have consolidated our gains. Our patrole and detach- monts have paahed forward and in many places are in close touch with the enemy. -

September 26, 12.35 p.m. The Maharaja of Patiala has started with £1,000 a fund organised by Sirdar Daljit Singh for an Ladian memorial at Brighton in recognition of the hospitality accorded to the Indian wounded.

September 20, 5,20 p.m.
The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Naik Shabamad Khan, of the Punjabit, for most conspicuous bravery.
He was in charge of a machine gun section in an expos- ed position in front of and, covering a`gap in our new line, within 150 yards of the enemy's entrenched position. He
beat off three counter-attacks, and worked the gun single handed after all his men cxcept two belt fillers were out of action. He held the gap for three hours under very heavy fre, while it was being made secure. When his gun was knocked out by hostile fire be and the two belt fillers held the ground with rifles till ordered to withdraw. Then with three men sent to assist he brought back the ammunition and a severely wounded man unable to walk. Finally he re- turned and removed the remaining arms and equipment. But for his great gallantry and determination our line must. have been penetrated by the enemy.

It was announced by the Beeston Tribunal yesterday that the War Office would exempt men under 30 years of age only in most exceptional cases. Thus it is thought that the men required before June will be obtainable without raising the
age limit.

A Paris communique says that the whole of Combles has been captured, with 1,200 prisoners, 30. machine guns and large booty.

The Frenen in the morning captured the part of Combles east and south of the railway and their patrols co-operated with the British who were cleaning up the north-west of Combles. Shortly afterwards the whole village was cap- tured. The booty is large, as the Germans had accumulated enormous mutations supplies. In the subterranean galleries a bundred abandoned German wounded were collected. Combles is full of German corpses.
The French, developing their success, captured a small wood north of Fregicourt and half way to Morval, and most of the fortified ground between the wood and St. Vaast wood, east of the Bethune road. A number of un- wounded prisoners were captured,

Sessions Case Adjourned Tifl Monday.

His Lordship said it was a very unfortunate thing, but one which could not be helped. The jury would have to come back on Monday, but he would make an order when the case was finished |exaasing them from attendance for several years.
