Curious Strike at Sydney.

A strike recently occurred in Sydney owing to wha›f labourers object ng to the employment of a detective who had been engaged to put an end to the extensive pi fering of cargo. The man denied. that they objected to the employ- ment of detectives to discover thieves, but would not tolerate the presence of the special detec- tive who had been put on. Two of the 104 men who ceased work in connection with the dispute were fined £5 and costs. Mean- while, so many complaints have been made regarding the heary losses sustained by the pillaging of cargo in Sydney that it is re- cognized that drastic steps will be necessary to put down the abuse. A comprehensive scheme has been drawn up, and the deep- sea, inter-State and coastal ship. ping companies are seeking the co-operati 'm'cf merchant and

panies and banks to cope with the evil.
