A Sanitary Comedy. What is called a "anitary comedy," which is now being given at the Yayoiss, Omka, is asid to be drawing full houses every day. The play, says the Japan Chronicle, in intended as & sort of popular lecture to teach people the importanım of hygiene and sanitation at a time when the city is suffering from the invasion of an epidemic of cholera. The ides of the play in slated to have been conosited by Inspector Tomioke, of the Minami police station, who aaturally feels proud of its success. It appears that very few of those who have soon the "sanitary play" visit on their way home ios-cream shops or fruit balls for the consumption of watermelons, ios "orest" or shaved ice, or waters mixed with suspicious ingredients. This abstinence is taken as an indica tion of the beneficial effect of the play,

Japanese Police for Shanghai. Japanese papers report that Mr. Johnstons, of the Shanghai palics foros, who recently visited Tokyo in connection with the en- -gagement of Japanese policemen for Shanghai, has finished his work. Among the cost qualifics- tions were certain aquirements in physique, ability to speak English, and ⚫ degree of profi- ciency in ju ji-ten." The selection of an Inspector and 30 policemen has already been effected, and thess officers will leave for Bhang hai shortly.
