It is reported that a Norwegian syndicate has placed a contract in Maryland, US.A., for twelve cargo-carrying motor. vessels of 3,000 tons each. The ships are to have a service speed on load draft of between eight and nine knots. It appears that the majority of them are to be fitted with hot-bulb engines. The vessels will in all probability be of the twin-screw type, and will be installed with machinery of about 1,000 b.b.p. It is remark- able the number of motor ships being constructed in the States owners. The for Norwegian reason of this however, is this it is well nigh impossible. Any Norwegian ship- building firm at the moment to take on a contract as they are so overwhelmed with work. That so many highpowered hot bulb. engined ocean-going vessels are- being constructed gors far to show the confidence which shipowners now have in the reliability of the low-compression motor for hard sea service.
