POULTRY:
Startling Discovy by Shanghai Police,
Says the North China Daily Nets of March 6---
An interesting discovery wa* made on Saturday morning by the French Police, when, as the re- mit, eight cases, sach containing 25 abells were found, in most The mspicions circumstances. fact that the property, on which the munitions were found, is in the occupation of a German, whose name was prominently connected with an arma case tried before the Hixed. Court in October last, adds considerably to the importance of the case, though the finding of big gas ammunitione seems to be without precedent
Situated on the French Siccawei Road, quite close to the creek baar- ing the same name, there stood, until a fortnight ago, a house in large grounds known as the "Otto Henser" gardens. The address is 44, Siccavel Road, in the French Concession. Over a month ago there was an outbreak of fre at this house, which was occupied by Mr. A. Nielsen, with whom Austrian em- was residing an ployee of the Shanghai Municipal Council. The fire, despite the attentions of the Fire Brigade, destroyed the house, but nothing suspicious wise noticed at the time. The company with whom the permises were insured asked the French Palice to make inquiries into the fire, which they did, and as s result, discovered the smmuni- tions. In addition to inspecting. the house, a thorough examination of the grounds was made, in the coume of which, one pond, of a niber,

It was here that axofficer, prob- ing with a stick, found some hard substance abmerged, and coolies, sent in to fetch it out, brought back with them a fair- sized iron bound bor, which was eventually followed by
seven others. Examination of the con- tents showed that each box con- tained twenty-five shells, brass cartridge sad projectile, of Hotch- his manufacture and of 65 mm. The projectile is solid, which indicates its use for naval par- poses, and is similar, sare that it is somewhat larger, to that fired into the Satilement during the seizure of the Chiness cruiser
Cheoho.
M. Nielsen, who was present during the search, and at the discovery, denied that he knew anything about the shells and ex- pressed surprise that they should
be found there.
