Sugar In 1915.

Mr.Jaman Dunn's review of the

Sagar trade for 1915 states -----

The actual bazinem în sugar having throughout the whole of the present year been

under

the control of the "Royal Commission

the Segar Sapply," it Laa become impor sible, from the excinsive character of the operations, to make any proper review of the move- ments which have taken place. The following are the average prices of cane sugar for the four pre-war years;-1811, 138. 741;. 1912, 13% 24.; 1913, 10m: 53.; 1914 (pre-war months), 128 134.; 1915, The eleven months in portations totalled 1,378,854 tans, 8. of which 918,614 tons were raw. Java importa (raw) were 292,076 tons, sad Philippine Islande 689 tans, and refined 104,549 tons. The stock of raw sugar in the United Kingdom at the opening of the year was 285,283 tona. On! Feb. 1 it was incressed to 313,939 tons, which was the highest point of the year. The lowest point waa 39,516 tone, at which it stood on Oct. 25. The exports of raw sugar for the eleven months ending Nor 30 last were 1,258 toms, against 5. 7,958 tors in 1914. British refined -exports were 4,070 tone, against | 9.

14,690 tons for the corresponding period of last year. The prospects | 5- for the supply of cane sugar

b. available for the new season are again giving promise of further increases at all the more import-b. ant centres of production, while, as regards consumption, ali bough this has as yet scarcely suffered, sa the more scale financial strains. which is bound to follow the pre- gent waste can hardly fail to in the opposite operate

those b direction. As between

divergent two

conditions, therefore, a supply increased from 14,000,000 tona to over 14,500,000 tons, and a demand reduced from 12,000,000 toza to say 13,000,000 tons, the margin of 3,500,000 tons to carry over into next season's account may wall give an assurance of safety as to the general situation with referezos to this commodity at least Seeing that the present deplorable state of affairs mast inevitably lead later on to some rearrangement of the whole angari trade of the world, it will b be necessary to discover the b meene whereby the cultivation b. of the care product can be further) b. Adeveloped, so as to provide against a restricted beetroot production for perhaps long after normal. conditions in trade have again been reached. The position is b which cane sugar at present b stands, its fatare extension, the b rapid development in the cultive-b tion of beetroot in America, and the efforts which are being uc cessfully made to bring this last b to importance as a branch in
