How the Pacific Mail Changed

The American International | Corporation beat the Union Iron Works by a margin of just twenty minutes in the purchase of the Pacific Mail Beef says an Azer- ican paper. Although-Mr. John A. McGregor, president, and other executives of the Union. Irom Works refused to discuss the part played by that corporation in the negotiations, it became know that the Union Iron Works had deposited a cheque for $100,- COOG. with the Pacific Hail and was on the point of acquir ing a fleet when the Amer- an International Corporation stepped in The Union Iron Works, intended to buy the seven steamers composing the Pacific Mail fit, and to dispose of them to different clients. Is interest in acquiring the fleet, in other words, was the interest of ship- ping brokers. The Standard Oil Company had agreed to take over one of the atasmers, and the Union Iron Works hoped to find quick buryera for the others. This fact become known. #t the last moment by the American In- ternational Corporation, which commissioned W. R. Grace & Co.

by the American International.... Corporation from the Pacific Mail, officials of Messrs. Grace & Co. said recently that all of the linera would ply to Panama by Mexican and Central American ports. The fleet, it is said, will be supplemented, with new steam- ers as fast as they can be so- quired. Regarding the route to Manila it was admitted that it was very desirable, but that it would have to depend on "goT- ernment favor." This is a polite way of saying that the corpora tion looks for amendments in the new seamen's law that will da away with many of the objections now voiced against it by ship owners. That ways will be found to overcome all these difficulties and that the advent of the cors poration in Pacific Coast shipping circles will spell a new era of maritume activity haze wh the general opinion voiced yes- terday by men competent to pass judgment on the people who
