January 21, 7.35 pm. Sir George Cave, E.C. (Solicitor-General), conducting the new Enemy Trading Bill in the Commons, said that the object of the Bill was to stop the gaps in the existing law. He pointed out how Tikai companies with many enemy shareholders might have profits, including increased war profits, which would continus to acomimulate to the credit of these shareholders. Thas a fund was being soi szïdo which, at the end of the war, might be of great use to our enemies in the economic stregle, He emphasised also that the shipping position was intolerable. The Germans, before the war, had been ahle to get all the benefits of our laws. These conditions must be changed. There was no idea of confiscation of property, but the State should have its hand on enemy property until it saw bow British property in Germany was treated. Other speakers approved of the provisions of the Bill, and urged the Board of Trade to proceed vigorously.
THE RUSSIANS.
January 22, 3.05 am.. It is officially announced from Petrograd that a Turkish attempt in the Caccases to drive back the broad Russian front ended disastrously, for the Turks were themselves repelled with heavy low, and fled. The Reesians, parsning, captured the town of Hassankala and drove the Tarks into the forts of E-rerum, sabring or capturing fifteen hundred; also capturing a gua, much munitions and an entire camp with tente. The Tarks are retreating precipitately in all direc- tions to the shelter of the Erzarum forts, abandoning magazines, guns, and stored. Everywhere cartridges and rifles litter the ground. Stragglers crowd the roads,
The Russians, on the southern shore of Lake Van, drove biok the Turks to the westward of Vastan. The Russians, south of Lake Urumis, drove the Kurds beyond the river Djagata.
January 223.25 a..
A Petrograd official statement says:-The Russians, on their western front, captured a German seroplane near the station at Vileyka. An enemy balloon exploded and burst into flames in the air," north-west of Zbarash. The car fell into the Russian lines. Aa attempt by the enemy to captus a hill north of Taartorysk was re- pulsed.
