December 28, 5.30 p.m. Renter's correspondent at Malts says that there were 316 persons on board the H.M. liner, Ville de Ix Ciotat, including 135 pasengers, of whom there were three Britishsm. The survivors state that the liner was of Crete xt 10 o'clock in the morning of Friday when she sighted first a Dutch and, a minute later, a Greek starmer. Almost immediately afterwards a terrific explosion shook the liner from stem to stern, The water rushed in and simultaneous- ly there was an explosion. A subenazine, which was dying the Austrian flag, sppeared on the surface a few yards away. The general opinion aboard was that one of the central vessels was gratis, Tingchow, Sixt Dec. covering the submarine, but both had disappeared. "Despite the Europe, Atau Mazo, Sisk Doc. escrmous hole in the starn, and the shock, there was no panic on French, Porthos, fud Jan. the Ville de la Ciotat, Five boats and some rafts were launched. One bost capsized, and the occupants, all women and children, were drowned. Another bost was smashed against the ship's side. Finally, the finer plunged, taking down most of those who perished. The submerine remained till the liner disappeared, then circled round the lifeboats, the members of the crew jeering at the sariya and talking them, “There's a British stemer behind. She will pick you up." The British steamer, Heros, came up two hours later, and spent 80 minutes in rescue work though the submarine Fort Bayard-Per SUIKAL 36th Dec. was still visible.
