DESOLATE OXFORD

Losses in Men and Money.

The Times University correm pondont writes:

The leaves are falling again in Oxford, and as they flatter down in the quiet quadrangle, in the college garden, or on the deserted towpath they suggest Homer's famous lines:-

"A leaves," so singethheofold, "Yes, such sro

man,

a

-transient race, They die and others have

their place, And all the tale of life is

told,"

And slaa! so many have fallen before their day, alipped in the green, and with bad and blossom too. Oxford has worn through the long, long vacation, fair as ever, but sitting solitary, sadova sola. Her torroma and her desola tion are not so palpable to herself or to others in July and August and September. But when Osto- ber comes she cannot deasive herself any longer; abe isremind- od of all she has lost, of what a shadow of her former self she is. She will have to try to begin again to go through the formos, bat with how mesgro and chora a company! Yot the will try, and old and young who still re main will "carry on," maintain ing her tradition, while it is their duty.

At the Central Criminal Court London on October 16 William Thomas Goodsir, the London manager of the American firm of Joseph Ullmenn, fur merchants, was charged with trading with the enemy. In January he wrote to the Leipeig branch of the firm for a parcel of squirrel fars. Previously he had naked for the consent of the Board of Trade to import the goods, and the day after the furs were received he had a reply re- fasing consent.

Mr. Justice Darling said the de- fendant had been applying that silly observation, "Business nsual," fer the benefit of the Ger- mans. That observation was the most unfortunate ever made in the course of the whole of this orisis. He could not do less than send him to prison, and it was with great regret that he did so, but people must be warned that this kind of thing must be stop-

The sentence would bo three months in the second divi Bion. The goods mentioned in the indiotment were ordered to be forfeited.

How long that may be begins to be a quest'or. There will be this term a beadfal of under-ped. graduates, there will be a few freshman coming up to mske & beginning, to take the O.T.C. training, and then to follow their brothers when they are ready, and of full age for commissions. There will be a few seniors, come prevented by health from serving, a few who have returned invalid ad, some reading for medicine or holy orders. There will be some Indian students and some Ameri- cone, fall, those latter, of cheer ing friendliness. Altogether the numbers expected are about 300 freshmen, instead of the 1,000 or thereabouts of ordinary years, and so undergraduate total of, say, 600 instead of 3,000,

Of the senior residents more have gone doring the Long Vaca- tion, with commissions as officers or chaplains, or to take up special work at the public offices in London, or to make munitions in Birmingham cr elsewhero. Some are going even now, and alto- ther thesmount of "war work" being cure by Oxford men is always increasing. College ser vanie, too, are very properly con- tinuing to go into the ranks or publio service. The state of things, then, is like that of last year, "only more sa.” Oxford is being slowly starved in men and money.
