December 5, 2.20 p.m. A message from New York states that the American motor-oar manufacturer, Mr. Henry Ford, who at the time of the British Loan in the United States threatened to withdraw his deposite from any Bank subscribing thereto, recently issued 200 invitations to prem- inent Americans to accompany him on a tour to Europe, at his expense, with a view to organising a Peace Conference, declaring his determination to have" the boya" out of the trenches by Christ- maa. For the purpose he chartered the Danish steamer Oscar II.

The scheme was received with such derision and denunciation by the American papers that it was first thought that it must be Hilled forwith. No prominent personage accepted the invitation, while Judge Parker, ex-Democratic candidate for the Presidency, replied that the Government ought to stop the expedition, "last Mr. Ford's antics are taken seriously and bring as into contempt, and even hatred." There were many other similar replies. The Govern- ment, however, confined itself to refusing paraports except to neutral countries.

Some slackening in the fighting on the Italian front is recorded in the Austrian and Italian communiques, but the Italian attacks have not desaed.
