Three First-class Passengers Arrested.
Alleged Unearthing of Huge Smuggling System.
A sensation was created among the first-class passengers on board the Mishima Maru yesterday soon after her arrival in port from London when it was learned that three of their number-two ladies and 8 gentleman had been arrested in connection with the al- leged importation into the Colony of a large quantity of opium. There was a sequel to the arrests at the Polios Court this morning, when, before Mr. Hazeland, Edmund Walter Hickrath, aged 31, described as a merchant, of Bngla New York, and Madame England; Ethel Roorden, aged
Emilie Delosire, of France; were charged with importing or siding and abetting the importation of 374 lbs. of opium into the Colony by the Mishima Mara. There was a second charge against the defendants of being in possession without a permit from the Sup- erintendent of Police.
The prosecation was conducted by Mr. King T. HI. (A.&.P.) whilst Mr. Mason, of Meesre. D'Almada and Mason, defended.
