No Responsibility for Losson ́due to Panama Landslides. New York, September 15th.--- Judge' Charles M. Hough in the Federal District Court yesterday austained the contentions of the Government in the Admiralty suit for $800,000 damages brought by the Pacifo Mail Steamship Company, as owner of the liner Newport, against the Panama Railroad Company: On the after. noon of August 17th, 1012, a pisce of the bulkhead, 230 feet long, of Lumber Dock No. 2 at Balboa, Canal Zone, collapred, osrrying with it intothe water about 18,000 tons of earth and two electric cranes, The steamship Newport fally loaded and ready for a return trip to this port, was lying along- side the bulkhead at the time. The electric cranes, toppling upon the vessel, caused it to sink, and it was two months before the boat was raised by wreckers. On the olaim that the bulkhead was im- properly constructed originally, that the piling bad become rotton and weakened because. of dredging, attacka of marine worms and the action of een water, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company asked for the $800,000 damages to cover tha cost of raising the Newport, re- pairs to the vessel, loss of cargo, and loss of the vessel's earnings during the time she was below water sad andergoing repaira, Jadge Hough hell that it had beea afirmatively shown at the trial that the collapse of the dook was a true slide for which no one has asserted that there is either remedy or method of ascertaining its imminence.
