OUR CONTEMPORARIES.

South China Morning Post,

A Comforting Sign. It is greatly to be regretted that so much has been made by the Bome press of Lord Kitchener's departure to the Near East. The ohief fault of modern Journalism," however of ono section of the press, that is-is that at all haz- ards and out of easily explainable happenings, it must make s "story." A plain and patentexplan ation of the event does not serve. Its points have to be distorted, the limelight has to be abed on it, and it has to be viewed from an angle which makes fair and scourate observation impossible. This kind of thing is excellent on the stage but it has no place in the serione business of life where clear sight and clear thinking are very nec. 6568TY. The departure of Lord Kitchener, then, did not disturb thinking men. On the contrary, it added to their feeling of security that all is going as well as can be orpected. If the Secretary for War can be spared from the heart of thinga at present, that is: euroly a cheering sign. It is an indication that matters are well forward at home and are in no had state in the principal theatre of war. I may be read as a guarantee, too, that in the other theatres of war the generale in command are to have the advant- age of frat-band advice from Britain's greatest living soldier.

Okina Mail.

China's Monarchical Aspirations.

Our Canton correspondent, in a contribution which we publish in another column of this issue, throws some light on the methods of voting on the question; and if, as he suggests, the voting in other Provinces has been similar to what it has been in Kwang-

tang there need then be no. aatonishment regarding the "un- animity" arrived at. But why should the matter (as appears to be the case in some quarters) contain any semblance of mystery or even that a controversy exists regarding the question? There is neither my atery nor controversy. The officials in Peking-those at least support- iog President Youn-have willed that a Monarchy and nota Republic is more enited to China and the Chinese; and therefore in the pre- sent state of affaire a Monarchy ia. inevitable. Who is to pro- vent it or by what means could it be prevented? It has long been manifest that President Yusn has been virtually a Dictator- an enlightened one," doubtless, but none the leɛa a Diotator. Opposition of a strenuous and perhaps of a successful character might have been forthcoming had not the most ardent spirits of the Republic-those that really did... the work that led to the final fall of the Mancha Dynasty dissipat- ed their efforts and rained their jopportunities by prematoreaction,

The

Great Britain and Japan. . In common with the British communities sosttered through- oot the Far East, the Colony of Hongkong will to-day cffer its ocrdial felicitations to the Japanese nation on the occar- ion of the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty Yoshihito as the 122nd Emperor of Japan. third son of the late Emperor Mateubito, the reigning zovereign ncoeaded to the throne on July 30th, 1912, but, owing to the death of the Empress Dowager in April, 1914, the Corona- tion ceremony was postponed. Though the delay and the circum- stance which necessitated it were matters for greatregret aithe time, the approaching festivities we may be sure, will aufter no dimi- sution of splendour or enthusiasm by reason of the fact that they are belated; indeed, the pre- \ parations indicate that they will. throw intɔ the abade all similar fanations that have ever been carried out in Japan. In Hong- kong the day will be observed as a pablio boliday, and, sta recep tion to be held in the forenoon by the Japanese Consul-General, His Excellency the Governor will offer the salutations of the Colony to our neighbour and ally:
