The Kitchener Canard.
How any person in possession of his or her sanity could serious |ly oiroclate and apparently be- lieve such an absurd rumour as that Earl Kitchener bad resigned prsace one's..comprehension: At the present juncture only the seT- ious illnessofour most distinguish, ed soldier and administrator would justify a step so extraordinary and

profoundly serions. Lord Kitchener is not the man to take such a stop merely (if such were the case) because be found him→→ self at variance with one or more of his colleagues in the Cabinet He is much more likely to tell them exactly what he thinks and leave it to them to co-oparata with |him-with or without their com plete approval or without caring mach, if anything, about thei disapproval. It is not withon good grounds that his Lordshir has got a reputation for being i man of strong character, one who knows what is wanted, what he wante and what is essential in the ocanity's interests. That a Lon don paper should publish such : ridiculous atatement is also a mat ter for astonishment.
Bouth China Morning Post.
German Shipping and the War Grave doubts exist outside a Germany as to the stability o German shipping and rumours o mpending insolvency have bee current for some time. The in Austry upon which so much o Germany's commercial prosperit was built has been sorely hit. W already know enough to make a aare that years of peace - mad slapse era German shippin concerns are restored to a position equal to that of aixteen manth ago. Nevertheless, Herr Heineken the general manager of the Nard deutscher Lloyd, has been endear ouring, through the columns d the Lokalanzeiger, to set fort the position in such a way as t alloy the fears of his fellow share holdera. Bat to do this, he be to assume that there will be a "andoubkeldy victorious issue t the war and that the commercia co operation of all the nation will follow in order to avert th danger of a commerical war.

The Balkans Campaign. For the moment the chie interest in the war has bee transferred from the Franco Belgian and Russian fronti where the enemy's ofensive seem to have been paralysed, to th Balkan Peninsuls, in which lie the strategic key to the futur of Europe. The situs tion there in admittedl very serious, and the publi will have learned with satisfaction that Lord Kitchener, in whor they repose such great confidence is now on bis way to the Near East after consultation with the French authorities in Paris, in order t study the intricate problem which there awaits solution. A Lord Lansdowne pointed on the House O recently in Lords, the Austro-German forces foiled in every other direction have turned to the Balkan Stater in the hope of achieving there the success that has been denied them elsewhere. By lavish promises o the territory of her ally, Turkey Germany has bribed Bulgaris t co-operate with ber in an attack on Serbia, with the object of hack ing away through the small wedge of Serbian territory that adjoini Roumania and separates Hungary from Bulgaria. The possession o this would allow of the passage of enemy troops and magitions to Tarkey, thus removing the pre liminary barrier to the realisation of one of Germany'e fondest am bitions. That ambition is to threaten our foress in Gallipoli and to menace Egypt, to asy noth, ing of other and more grandiose schemes.
