Chinese Commercial Baterprise,

Some few yours ago a band of enthusiasts decided to organize an exhibition of the manufactures aud products of Hongkong and its immediate neighbourhood, and to those who were privileged to attend the City Hall the array was a revelation of the skill of the Chinesa often under the guid- ance of European experts, but generally on his own initiative, So very few of us here are fami» |liar with the wonderful works of. art created amid modest aur- roundings in this colony by Chinese, and the exhibition which Wom BO Buccessfully organised svaked the admiration of hun- dreds of visitors. We are glad to find the spirit of expansion and development has seized the Chinese in various centres of industry, and no greater proof of this evolution can be adduced then the report of the Minister of the Interior on the management of the exhibition of home products recently held in Paking.

Daly Press.

The Premier's Speech,

Though it cannot be said that the Prime Minister told the House of Commons anything very re- freshingly new in his com prehensive review of the opera tions in the various theatres of war, he disclosed some interesting: facts in regard to incidents which have been the subject of much speculation for months past. We now learn authoritatively that Admiral Lord Fieber disapproved at the outset of the attack on the Dardanelles unless a military

foros was sent to co-operate with the Navy. At the time, it was suggested that Mr. Churchill, the Firat Lord of the Admiralty, im- pelled by inordinate self esteem, had embarked upon the enterprise on his own responsibility, in defi- ance of the warning of the First Ses Lord. Nobody,of course, who knew anything of the functions of the Cabinet could have given any credence to such a suggestion, nor could any sane person have supposed that Mr. Churchil would have been able to induce his colleagues to endorse, his view in opposition to that of a expert unless he could give con vincing reasons for the course he advocated. We now know, on the testimony of the Prime Minister himself, that the opera tions were only undertaken after the most carefal deliberation,

China Yai,

The Prime Minister's Statement

2.

As was to be expected by all uninfluenced by party rancour the Prime Minister has supplied a plain, unvarnished tale, compre hensive in its scope and just in ite conclusions. Mr. Asquith in not the man to pander to the pestiferous vapouring of diasp pointed politicians: he is too strong a masa to be affected by them in any way. None welcome mest readily than be fair-oriticism and cone is more ready than he to accept assistance from any quarter, when such assistance is o value. Of late all sorts of absurd opinions have been expressed in and out of Parliament, "by diasp pointed politicians chiefy, re garding friotion in the Cabinet regarding compulsory service, and other controversial subjects; and the wisesores, not content to com ment and predict, have even fon more than one occasion gone so far as to malign. Against such pestiferous malignity, as we have said, men of the stamp of MY Asquith, Sir Edward Grey and Mr. Balfour can afford to smil with mach composure and not i little contempt.
