A letter which appeared in our columns last night concerning the needs of the Society of B. Vincent de Paul, deserves the attention of our readers. As the | writer_points out, in our readiness to subscribe to war fands of various sorta we may quite sually |forget that charity should begin at bome, and may, through thoughtlessness, neglect the de- serving poor who are at our Own gates. "The poor," in the sense that we understand Home, are said to here no existence in this Colony; in a sense, the statement, is true. But there are hundreds of cases of indigence that are never heard of by the public; in fact that are only known to the sufferers themselves and to the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul who 'make it their business to know'el and to relieve them wherever ров aible. Among the Portuguese and the Obristian Chinese and co- casionally among the Europeane, there are persona who, through old age, sickness or ill luck, are in need of relief-occasional or permanent as the case may be; and, in order to assist suob, the Society must have funds. Its ex- chequer is dependent entirely ‹ 1 thecontributions of the public, end its appeal for money is one which all who know Hongkong will very heartily endorse. The forthoom- ing open air fete, to which His Excellency and Lady May are again extending their patronage,
