November 1, 4.20 p.m. The weather was most unfavourable and the troops had to: fight in rain and darkness but their spirit everywhere was magni. ficent and the wounded were cheerfully optimistic. Great German Awa. Ma, a counter-attacks came as expected, and were delivered on the after- noon of October 8 by some twenty-eight battalions of the first line with larger forces in support. The Germans were repulsed with tremendous losses, leaving nine thousand dead. The Field Marshal | Australia, Aldanham, 5ki Nov. devotes much space to the excellence of our artillery. Numerous Australia, Changsha, 7th Nov. batteries of heavy guns and howitzers have been added. The australia, Tange Marn, 12th Nov. arrival of these reinforcements has tested the capacity of the artillery as a whole to expand to meet the requirements of the army, and this hos maintained its high level of efficiency. A special_word of praiso is necessary for the R.G.A. for the admirable way in which they accustomed themselves to conditions in the field and for the Amor-For HONGKHENG, 3rd, Nov. 5 koowledge they applied to special problems of trench warfare. Indeed the whole of the artillery has done splendidly. The pre- paratory bombardment of a modern battle, requiring an immense concentration of guns and enormous quantities of ammunition, demands the highest skill in organisation and technique, The artillery in action showed the necessary talents, while the success Shanghai against the great German counter-attack of October 8 shows their espacity to concentrate fire effectively at a moment's notice. Field Hollow, Marshal French also especially mentions the tunnelling companies, composed of mining engineers and miners, who are ancosssfully carrying on the work of effective and defensive mining. There have been 240 air combate during the period covered by the despatch, in which almost invariably the British have been successful. On one occasion en officer engaged and drove off four enemy aeroplanes, Shanghai, N. Chica Japan via Kobo-For and, on snother, two officers engaged air German machines and (Europe via Siberia Shanghai Br. P.O. disabled at least one.
