The assumption of the supreme mili- tary o mmsad by the Emperor Nicholas rerulted in embarkation by the Russian forces upon a conater-cffensive that has brought the long series of Austro-German Facoesses in the Eastern theatre to an abrupt stop. La every sector of te long eastern front, inolad- ing the difficult terrain of the contre, the Teutonic armies are now struggling at heavy cost, not to maintain their advance, but to retain their hold upon the ground they won.
