Russla,

Day after day we are learning. to know Russia and the Russian people as many of us never know them before. Till the great war broke out the real Russis was comparatively a salad boɔk tơ the British nation, and one of the most gravifying features of the calamity is the faller understand- ing that is now drawing the Bussion and British peoples to gether in honds of 'bio'herhood. In many of its rhinor phases the war is followed by the average British roader with but indifferent interest, but this is not so with the great part that is being played by our easiern ally. Her progress awakene on keon an ecto of aympathy as that of the allied-- sraies on the western front, her reverses are viewed with as grave misgiving and ber

many magnificent recoils hailed with delight as enthusiatic na though they were the heroic deeds of our own boys.

"Medicinal Oplum" for Canton. The danger of a recrudescence of opium-emcking in Kwangtung is keenly apprehended, for it is manifest that the interests of the Opium Farm are în direct corflict with the declared policy of the Government. The policy aime at total suppression of the trade at the earliest porsible moment: while the main objeos of the Farm is to sell the drug, and to continue selling it,

long as possible at the great- eat possible profit. Hence, RS wo have said, there is a deeply- rooted suspicion that the heavy stocks of native opium held in Yannan may find their way into the Canton godowns; and that opium smoking; in the near future will become much more general in Canton than is the osse to-day. It would be scandalous indeed if sn. Opium Farm fiosrced by bigh officials were allowed to defest the declared policy of the Govern- ment, and, assuming the carrent reports to be tras, it would be instructive to know in the first place whether a full statement of the facta has been forwarded to the Central Government, and if so whether this grand money- making scheme has its approval and sanction.

War's Tragic Disillusion, Therefore, even if Germany were to win this war-which she can not-ahe would be beaten in the end by the fact that her will was out of harmony with the growing world will and the com- ing world-order., And, on the other hand, the Briiiab and French and Russian and Italian boys who #re fighting and dying in the trenches are not mere nationals; they are soldiers of humanity, if humanity, as we of modera Europe understand it, is to have any chance at all, What would happen to the armies, writes સ Women correspon- dent, 'if a million women were to rush in between them?" Well, the armies would at least be reminded that half the world expects to live out its life on far other conditions than in the year of terrora that has passed and the year of teirors is to come.

Exhaustion will not in fleelf produce this change, for all the world will not be exhausted, nor the rivalries of young, smbitious nationalities in Eastern Europe and of the empires that patronise them. It is through its faith that the world can attain salvation; not through its knowledge, which is the knowledge of death and evil; or through its power, which will in a few months give place to the weakness of a little child. ·
