The First Electrically. Propelled Submarine Vossel.
In the article on Submarine, by Mr. Simon Lake, 'id the July issue, reference is made to the electrical ly-propelled submarine vessel which I invented, built and de- monstrated at Liverpool in 1888.

In the first place; what Mr. Lake terme down-bad! sorews were not used for submerg- ing when onder way, but wete onnected to a pendulam and were stationary so long as the bost was

I the considered, and still consider, any daviation from an even keel dangerous when submerged. This I think, has been proven, with anfortunate loss of life. Tusse pró pallers in vertical tábes could ba used to submerge the vessel when stationary and in “awash trim.” For eabmerging the vessel when underway I used a pair of hori- zontally balanced side rudders or' inclinable water planes placed amidabips. By regulating the angle of these the vessel was raised or lowere. in the water. I never destroyed all the reserÝC buoystoy. Two locomotiva "fish” torpedoes were carried, ons on each side above the side rudders, am.which were operated by a lover and scoured to the vessel by grips

the originator of the following features as applied to submerged Vessels: That this was the first electrically propelled submarine vessel; the use of horizontal balanced rudders placed amid ships; vertical propellers in tubas through the vessel for keeping the vessel on an even keel or sub- merging when stationary; the method of carrying and discharg ing "fish" torpedoes; the adap- tion of a submarine so that it. could be carried by, and worked from, a war vessel
or
other craft as its base. With regard to Mr. Lake's atsto ment, that I did not, farther develop submarines, I had pro- duced a practicable submarine, the first to be propelled by eleo- trical power derived from 80- cumulator cells, which all recent submarines have copied. In fact, more capital, could make money by improving upon the inventions of others, a government inspector of submarines recently told me that I had in 1888 used various cherished patents of various sub- appliances that are now the
marine companies. As stated by Mr. Lake, no government (sxoept the Turkish) actually purchased any submarines until many years after I firet brought mine to their notice.-New York Maritime Re- gister.
