Woman's War Work. Woman bas turned out one of the trump assets of the nation in the present crisis. Knowing how much woman have already done and the spirit which animates them, we realise that the eloquent appeals made by. Bor Majesty the Queen and by Lady Sydenham for farther effort will not pass unheed- ed. Self-sacrifice, it has been said, is absolutely necessary to a wo man's happiness, and it is not sur- prising thatevery women through- out the length and breadth of the Empire on which the sun never Beta: la inexpressibly enger to work and give for the noble cause of the freedom of humanity, Never in bistory has there been a time like the present when wo- men took such an active part. They are at the front, not as fight- ing em zons but as ministering angels to relieve the suffering of the troops. In a hundred and one other phases of the routine of war they are fulfilling tasks-s very hard tasks too which in days before the war were strange to them. Even in this remote and small colony there are banda of patriotio

whose thoughts are omstantly centred doing their littlo bit.

The Developments in the Balkans. Henco Russia has survived the overwhelming shock which Ger- many launched upon her last April or May. Though she lost great stretches of territory her armies remained intsot, and now, more abundantly supplied with munitions and the weapons of war, are fighting a strong offen- sive practically along the whole line; while on the western front the long wearing-down process followed by the Allies' Generalia- eimo, has been at last succeeded by a vigorous cffensive which threatens to crumple up the enemy's armies in France apd Flanders and bring about their retirement before very long to the other side of the Bhine. All military writers base their o.nfidence in the ultimate victory of the Allies mainly upon the steady exhaustion of the Germanic reserves of man-power.» That process has been going on at a great rato during the past six months, and the longer the war is continued the greater must be come the numerical anperiority of the Allied forces in the field. Judged by such considerations as these, the Germanic Powers would seem to be weakening their general position by dissipating in the Balkan States their already weakened strength to an extent at present incalculable and the war may come to an end the sooner on this account.

Ohina Vail:

Topics of the Hour. One of the latest telegrams to hand saya that the Greek Govern---- ment's attitude towards tba En- tente Powers will be one of "benevolent neutrality." That isa ve expression: and the inventor of it deserves to be coo-. gratulated on his originality, Quite recently the Bulgarians- declared that: thoir attitude” was one of " armed neutrality," which c certainly has a more bellicore ring about it. As the Greeke are, eo far, marely allowing themselves to be led against their wishes by the Court oliqas, related, unfor- tunately, to the individual who in orazy enough to call himself the

Most Highest," which, apart. from its grammar, is a sublimely ridiculous title. It would be interesting to know whether the recent gusty telegram sent by Kaiser William to his sister, the Queen of Greece, has had any influence in the disappointing: turn of events in Greece. The Kaiser, it will be remembered, in the telegram mentioned, referred to bis destructive, sword."'— jist as though he personally used the weapon on the battlefield 1.5 Alas! for the Greeks, if they allow acch conduct in their King. Should not a king's conduct be what is? generally considered as “kingly": and who said that the ladies in: these days had no infligence in political affaire ? Bat was not evan na infinitely greater man than this poor Grook king-the sighty Julius Caeser to wit perscaded to abandon an im portant project at the instigation of his wife..
