Shipping on the Pacific. In the meantime there are ramoura that the Chinese are prepared to embark on a huge sobeme with the view of ceplur ing the trade relinquished by the Americans. This may be true. There is money enough, and enterprise enough, smong educat- ed Chiness merchants, but, the golden opportunity must be Beinsd now by the acquisition or constraction of • fleet. On the other hand hayo, asen, that our Japanes friends are not blind to the calls of the hour, 2losta are being oreated as burriedly as man can devies to all the breach which now existe. Again, our Datoh friends, have realised that the flag of the Netherlands should be seen on the Pacifio, for a new line has been started to meet the needs of the growing orga; and passenger traffic to and from Sin Francisco, Thus we have three nationalities represented in the effort to pounce. on that prize which has been abandoned by the Americans. We. have every assurance that the pre- Bent British services will be ex- tended also, so that, after all, there is little danger of ADJ monopoly being excroised gyer the Pacific trade.

The Confucian Revival If it be true as Dr. Herbert Gilea remarks in one of bis re- cently published Hibbert Lectures од "Confucianism and ite Rivals," that the Chinese in general are impatient of a weekly day of rest, it cannot be denied that since the Revolution they bave shown a strong inclination to increase the number of publio holidays. Within the past ten
days we have seen the Chinese generally observing two DOW holidays one in celebration of the Revolution, and the other... yesterday's event-in celebration of the birthday of Confacius. I may, indeed, be said that few changes which bave followed the Revelation in China have been more conspicuous than the resus- oitation of Confucianiem, if the manifestations among the Chinese of Hongkong and Catton are com mon to the rest of China, All the principal Chinese places of bagi- ness in the Colony ware olosed yesterday and there was a display of bunting such as in former yeara was to be seen only during the New Year holidays. It would seem that the oals. of Confuci anism has never appealed to the massen as it appeals to-day, but to what extent it appeals to them
a religious festival, in the western senes of that term, as distinct from a public holiday it is very difficult to say.

The Slay Question.
The South Blave contend that Italy desires. the territory only for strategio purposes to gain command of the Adriatic, Bat there are other reasons --** of race and reneous of what is called con siment,' there being usually the. most powerful. The South Slavs believe that, by s contention with the Western Allies, Italy hee already escared a promise of Istria with Fume), all the is laods, and the Dalmatian conat from Zara to Ragosa, In ita ap- peal to the British on behalf of this new Slav State the deputs- tion made these promises: The Southern Slay State (Jugoslavia) will be an element of order and of peace. While devoting its whole energies to the cause of progress it will also develop those wellknown virtues of its seafar ing population which the British nation will be the first to op preciate. Its ports will be open to trade in a manner bitberto un- known, and through them a commercial outlet be assured to all the nations of their kinter- land, especially to the Czechs and the Magyars. It is this racial trouble that is at the bottom of the incessant Balken forment and so complicated is it that it seems almost impossible of solution-of a solution acceptable to all!
