Chinese steamship line across the Pacifio is a posalbility of the near future. The report says: "At least firemodern steamers, equip- ped - for passenger and vargo traffic, construoted along lines similar to the vessels now operati ed in transpacific service by the Nippon Yasen Koisha, designed to follow the semi-tropical_ronte and make regular calls at Hono lula, both outward and homeward, are assured, and will go into commisión. within a year, says: Fang Sai, the representative of a company of Chinese ospita lists, who is on his way to the United States to close negotiations and place contracta for materist leading to the early completion Is in of the fleet of steamers." added that the Chinese Republic has guaranteed a generous sub sidy to the company. Much of the capital was subscribed in South and Central China. The vessals will make Shanghai a ter minal port. The route may be extended to inolade Hongkong and possibly to Manila, The Vossele are expected to fy the Chinese flag and will, with but few exceptions, carry an entire complement of Chinese as officers and crew. Two steamers are expected to enter the trade within ashort time. It is possible that they may be purobased on the east cost. According to the Asahi (Osaka), negotiations have been in pro gress between three Japanese steamship companies (presum- ably the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Deaks Shosen Kaisha, and the Toyo Kaisha) on the one side sud the Japan Cotton Trade Guild on the other with reference to the proposed increase of freight on American coiton by 10 cents per

that the contemplated increaSS should come into effect from No vember 1 and that the hold spaoa to be guaranteed should be increas- ed; to this conditional agreement the answers of the steamship com- panies are now awaited. The Toyo Kisen Kaisha is apparently re- luctant to guarantee the provision of extra bold space, and it is believed to be the swaiting of a reply from the Toyo Kisen Kaisha's San Francisco office on the subject that is delaying the decision. It is anticipated that some time will elapse before the freight question is settled. There have been somewhat more or less persistent rumours of late that the Oosanio Steamship Co, ware going to withdraw their steamer Sierra from the Honolulu run and place her on the run to Australia in conjunction with the Bonoma and Ventura, the sama rumour also crediting the Oceanio Co. with the intention of acquiring the steamer Kansas City from the Union Iron Works and placing her on the run between this pork: and Honoluld. For a long time the Kansas City was operated between this port and Portland by the 8: and P.9.9. Oo. in conjunc tion with the Bose City. She is a 17-knot host with good passen« ger accommodations, and osn asrry about 8,500 tons of cargo,
