Until this experiment had been tried, says the writer (in a San Francisco paper) "it always sermed as though the delays of the Navy Department in sending battleships through the canal were in the nature of a decided elur open the most important en- terprise of an engineering ebarso- t-r which this country has ever undertaken. Even worse than the delays was the fact of explaining them by doubts as to the depth and safety of the waterway. In times of peace that would have been a very bad advertisement for international shipping, but all
that is past and gone," The canal bas now been open to traffic for: over a year and its navigability has been abundantly demonstrat- ed. There have been cccasional landslides at certain sections of the canal, but they have caused le delay and the engineers have token all themeene koown to them to prevent similar interruptions in the lature. Already a goodly Dumber of ships trading with China and Japan have passed through the new waterway, and when shipping conditions return to the cormal after the wor we shall doubilers see the number of chips using this route to or from Europe steadily increase with the great development of trade which must follow the exploitation of the vast resources of China,

The German Doctrine of Hate, The Berliner Tageblatt, in an article on the fatility of hatred. calle attention to the absence of this sentiment in England, and refers to the experiences of a correspondent.who had returnedg from London after living there for rome months during the war. Among other thinge, he says:: Hatred against Germany does not exist, and the great wave": of hatred that cas encound-: tere on arriving in Germany is quite foreign and indeed incomprehensible to the English. Educated Englishmen with whom I spoke have a deep aversion of the fabulona being whom they call the War-Lord," who, they believe completely rules Germany and of whose non-existence. not even the best educated people can be convinced. Such crdinary people as butohers, bakers, soles- men, or workmen do not under- eland hatred between peoples, and see in this mighty war only a contest between tro' giants, Eagland and Germany.
German Losies in the West, Amsterdam, July 19,-Is in reported from Hasselt that wearly 5,000 bodies of Germans recently killed on the western front have been brought there for barial...
