Hongkong's Currency. Eight months ago we declared, that the state of the local currency constituted a public scandal which earely called for some action on the part of the GoverL- ment. We are not aware that ` any lepe whatever have been [laken by the Governfhent with a view to the removal of this in-
quitous tax on the community.- It surely cannot be beyond the capacity of the Government's fir- ancial advisers to find B
remedy for this deplorable state of thinge. We have heard the Money Changers' Guild men- tioned as the fount and origin of all the trouble with the subsidiary coinage and with the standard coin to some extent also, and consequently the abolition of the money-changer is one of the remedies that might be sug gested. Another is that the Goy ernment shall make only the s British dollar the legal tender of the Colony and prohibit the dir colatica of the Mexican dollar. We do not ourselves feel compet- ent to pronounce a judgment on either of these suggested remedies. but we gladly aubmit them for consideration by the Government, shoes manifest duty it is to find some remedy for the intolerable state of things we have described.
