OUR CONTEMPORARIES,

South China Morning Post.

The South African Contingent.

If South Africa, even on a sobie relatively small compared to the vast requiremente of the military situation in Fandera, cau semist with gans end the men to work them she will be doing e farther Imperial service; and we have every reason to suppose that the South African artillery units are in a high degree effoient. The troops who defied Nature's exae- tions in swamp and desert, and Insisted on reaching by deviousS ways the haunts of the enemy, must be men who can bear the rigours of almost any, climate. Besides, they will go from an sot- ual field of battle, where they had, to cope with a wily and well arm- ed foe. These are the men who will form the Union's voluntary contingent, the flower of South African manhood. If there is one wish Britishers" the world over would express at this hour it is that General Boths himself will be able to proceed, at any rate to England, at the head of his forces. He has already received the thanks of Parliament, but when he reaches.England's shores ho will be acclaimed by a people, whose hearts have been touched by his bravery and skill, as well as by his unswerving loyalty.

Tropical Disease.

We have never been much im pressed by these alarme in regard to yellow fever, for it is well. known that trade for many years has been carried on between Far Esetorn ports and the yellow fever countries of Central and South America, and we believe we are correct in saying that not a single case of yellow fever has been re- ported or discovered in the Far East, notwithstanding the fact that some hundreds of Chinese and Japanese, coolier must have. returned to their homes after a period of service in countries where yellow fever in epidemic.: However, it is well that the authorities at the verious ports of Asia should have had their attention specially called to the increased possibilities of danger from the greater volume of traffic certain to be developed by the opening of the Panama Canal, and the fact that not a single. case has been reported or die- covered in the Far Eist, so far as we are aware, is very reassuring aben we remember that the Panama Canal was formally opened to traffic just twelve months ago.

In 1833, another. The cause of the explosions was Inter ex plained by an Austrian general who found that every cotton fibre was a tube when the gun cotton was washed, there-- remained mingte quantry the tubes, which in out beal and be |rising, led to
