Command of tho Soar According to an infidential home paper no vessels were do tained in the Thames, isst month for lack of berths at the docks, In Liverpool and other busy ports steamers bringing cargo from overseas had to wait their turn, so great was the arrival of goods for Great Britain. Great as is the carrying capacity of our ships and large the demands of the tome country for supplies, it is marvellous to record the fact that in spite of the frightfulness of the German submarine the... great merchant service of Great Britain proceeds wundismayed sarose the pathless coeans, bearing fol and supplies for the people. Ir has been common knowledge to most of us in the Erst that for months past many devicea bavo. But no German has had the temerity to suggest that ships flying the German fisg are any longer able to carry German goods to distant Boss from the home country.

'China and Opium.
What the Chinese and other people find a little difficulty in. understanding, remarked our contemporary (the N. G. Daily [News), was why, after the B.itish « Government had been invited to appoint delegatea to search the province, these delegates should not have been allowed to carry out their task. The obvious in ference, of course, is that the Governor of Kiangsa" had made a mistake," and that opium
was, being grown in the province after all. At all events, as our contemporary remarks, the only alternative explanation is that, knowing the province to be in fact, free, the Government, for the sake of $21,000,000 deliberately decided to keep it open to foreign opium for the cr two years. Whatever the true explanation may be, the facts of the oplom situation generally in Chins clearly falsify in advanos the pre- diction that opium cultivation snd opium smoking will be finally suppressed in China by the end of this year.
Ohina Mail,
A Year of the Great European
War.
Two facts stand forth pre- eminently on this the first Br Diversary of the great war, namely, that the British Empire and her Allies in arme are more than ever determined to prosecute the war to a successful issue. That is the first fact: the second is that Ger- many and her Allies in arms are now much more deependent than they were a year ago. Owing chiefly to the thoroughly un- soropalons nature of Germany's macbinations it took the Allies some little time thoroughly to realise the extreme gravity of the Lovition of affairs as they present- ed themselves in the war's early stages; but having once realised it, there has been an increasing effort on their part to cope with their formidable enemies, The our enemies are indeed, much more despondent than previously there is abundant, evide withstanding, the Kaid ful utterances and, the occasional outborat
claptrap pearing in the German Pre The recent victories in Poland may stimulate them fór the time being, but they quite obviously are not binding them selves to the real situation, which points to inevitable victory for the Allies. Neither Germany nor Austria is prepared to face a war that will, if continued, practically mean their extermination or, at least their disappearance sa fitat rate Powers, and both now realise that the inexhaustible at the command of the Empire, of France Eussia Ifat are now certain against them along contin
