Motor Boats in Shaohslog. Several detachable 6 n.p. motore have recently been "installed on bosta trading between Shaobaing and Sishing and bave been oper sting with great success. The high cost of petrol, on which the engines run, bas somewhat binder- ed the development of the trade, and it is thought that the in- troduction of a light engine, run- ning na kerosene, which is plenti- ful in the district, would meet with great success.

Fore River Shipbuilding

Corporation,.".

The Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation at its own request ta spending £50,000 in putting in much stronger turbines than at first built for the battleship Nevada, under construction st its yards. This step was taken by the shipbuilders because of the unpleasant experience with · the Cartis tarbines which |the company built and installed, on the Argentine battleship Ravadavia, when it was found that the buckets were not strong enough and the metal was serious- ly weakened by the superheated" steam. The corporation is willing to shoulder the expense rather than atand a chance of having to tear out the tarbines and repair or remodel them after the ship in ready for service.

stances which have proved un- favourable to the development of industrial enterprizes in this country, the construction of the Lang Ching-Yu-Hai Railway bas made come progress. The don- struction "of the north-western section of the line will traverse a hilly and mountainous region on the borders of Shenai and Kensu, and will entail considerable dif-, ficulties and expenditure if the line is constructed according to the originally projected route, the merobants and gentry of Kan-P an have approached the Railway authorities with the suggestion that the original plan be abandon- ed and a new line projected through the southern frontiers of Shensi and Konsu. The con struction, it is claimed, will be greatly facilitated, as the country in those regione is comparatively level. Bat this will cause some needless prolongation of the line, de the route leading up to Lat- chow, the north-western terminns of the railway, is not a direct one and it will have to wind through certain districte. When the total cost and the local conditions of those distriata are faken into con- sideration, the advisability of adopting the route now proposed remaine doubtful.or
