General Sir A. Barret, Uom manding the Persian Gulf Ex-. |pedition, in his final despatch has the following reference to the British India Company and Messrs. Lynch Bros.:-I am glad to take this opportunity of ex- pressing my thanks to the officere and orews of the steamers of the British India Steam Navigation Company which conveyed the troops from India at the outset of the operations while the Tarka were still in occupation of the country. At this time there was much risk, owing to the difficult navigation of the river, and to the fact that the banks were often held by the enemy. The one desire of the captains of those vessels, was to pash forward as rapidly as possi ble and to afford us all the help that was in their power. The same remark applies to the cap- tains of Messrs Lynch Bros. ateamers and of the other river craft, which have been in con- stant employment on transport duties and have many times been in situations of considerable danger. The following are those who are worthy of special commendation.Captain R. WE Cooper, H. T. Elephanta; Captain G.B. Elton, B.T. Umaris; Captain.

The steamer Tjikem- bong, which made her trial trip. on July 18, 1914, left Amsterdam for Java on the 28th. There was no paying outgoing charter to be had, and thus the ship went in ballast. She arrived at Hatavis on August 30, and left for her first trip or the China line on September 1. As a result of the war the deli. very of the sister abip Tjisondari had to be delayed until April 8,
