The Position of Petroleum. During 1913 the production of petroleum increased 8 per cent., compared with the previous year, reaching 54,000,000 tons, of which the larger share 34,000,000 tona --was produced in the United States: Russia produced about 9,000,000 tona, Mero rather more than 3,000,000 tons; Sumatra and Boraeo, 2,000,000 one; Galicia and British India, rather more than 1,000,000 tons. During the last five months of 1914 the European production of petroleom naturally was much hampered by the war, whilst the production in the United States was carried on with great eotivity dur ing the greater part of last year, Estimat made before August 1 arrived at a probable aggregate for the year of 40,000,CO) tons. The yield, in spite of hundreds of mall wells tipping, was #ɔ immense that stocks rapidly awelled, and prices recaded, O the other American countries, only Mexico plays a part of im- !portance as regards the world's supply of petroleum. In the beginning of 1914 a speedy in- orease of the production was anticipated, and an output of some 30,000,000 £ 40,000,000 barrels was spoken of; but, as a matter of fact, the production, has probably fallen from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 barrels short of the figure for 1913-24,000,000 barrels.
