For some time he was an Officer in the Indian Coast Bervice of the British India Steam Navigation Company. In the summer of 1913 he came home and joined the P. & O. Service being appointed as an Officer of H. M Transport "Somali". Shortly after the outbreak of war he joined the Flying. Corps with the rank of Flight Sub, Lieutenatt. R. N.
