Her cargo consists of 149,000 cases of red- ed petroleum, 3,000 asses of naphths, and 300 cases of topa. The Holland-American Line.

A corres; ondent writing to the Financial Times Baya:-"Some- thing akin to a romance lisa behind the announcement that certain Dutch interests have bought from the Hamburg-Ame rica and Norddeutsche Lloyd Companies their shareholding in the Holland-America Line, equi valent to 25 per cent, of the capital of that undertaking. Many years ago this interest was held by Harland and Wolff, the Bol fast shipbuilders, who, however, subsequently disposed of their in- vestment in equal proportions to the White Star and Atlantic Tesn sport Companies. These in their turn passed on their holding in the Holland-Amerion Lins to the two principal German Companies, Sailings from Hongkong-Subject to change without notice. while fate has now decreed, that the shares shall be taken over by Displacement Steamer.

and, in view of the conditione brought about by the war, it is ob viously very desirable that neutral shipping should be held by nentral interests entirely, instead of, as in the case of the Holland- America Company, to a very large extent by German shipowners. The price paid for the shares will not be disclosed, but the general impression is that they have been purchased at a figure which is favourable to the buyera, and which will probably render them a more remanerative hold ing to their present" owner than to their predecessore.

Albert Dock, which states": beg to call your attention to the difficulties we are experiencing in dealing with goods for which Privy Council permits are requir ed. Steamer after steamer, & large number of packages are stopped by the Castoms for ship- ping bills for licensed goods, which we have to keep in the shed sometimes a month or more,

until the necessary forma ities have been arranged, As you are aware, the ehed now is, Dearly always in a congested state, therefore, I beg to suggest. that it should be strongly impressed on shippers not to send prohibited goods to the dock until the Privy Council licence is actually in their possession." They slec draw attention to extracts from the Order made by the Commissioner of Customs and Excise on Dec. 3 last, and the Customs and Inland Revenue Act, 1879, which show that a heavy hibited goods even being "bro to any quay or other"

Therefore, it le clear at such goods must not be forwarded until the Privy Counoi Licence is actually in your possession, Failure to observe this regulation will sooner or later involve those shippers ignoring such in very serious trouble. Therefore, we earnest recommend imperative insty tions being given to cerned to not in accordance with the Customs requirements. First, obtain your licence, then form for shipment not before goods are safer possession.
