The Flood Calamity.

** Engrossed As we have been with war and its daily toll of vintime, there is not a soul in Hongkong to-day whose thoughts and sympathies do not revert for the time being to our neighbours. of the West River dietriot in their hour of trial. The first secount of the great floods to reach the colony appeared in the columns of the S. C. M. Post on Monday and subsequent reports in our cons temporaries bave borne out and smplified the sad de aile. Words utterly fail however to convey even a remote idea of the extent of the tragedy and the suffering it has caused. Estire families have been awept away, he mea bave boin demolished by the action of the water and bountiful orops, upon which the inhabitants ofTM the region depended for their livelihood, bave been ruined, Strong dykes, many yards, deep, representing long years of in dustry and calculated to defy the river in its wildest fary, have. melted away at many places..

Ostracising the German. Moreover, the disclosures made since the outbreak of the war re- garding Germany's long-cherish. ed objects have been sufficient in themselves to put an end to any idea of falare co-operation be- tween the British and German merchants in the world of com- merce, while the barbarities which bave disgraced the German oon- duct of the war, ocmmitted as they have been ander the sanction of the highest suthorities and apparently with the unanimous support of the nation, compel all. who recognise the rente of duty and respect they owe to the men, | women, and children who have already.suffered from these bar- barilies, and to all who may yet suffer from them, to completely separate themselves from a people whole intizota, are so primitively savage. A month before the war' no one could possibly have believ ed that any European nation- and especially the German nation, which has ever regarded itself as on a higher level of kultar and civilisation than any of its neigh todra-could have proxcuted a war, sa Germany actually his done, by methods which Lord Kitchener went so far as to delib erately describe as "vying with the barbarous aavagery of the Darvisher. The golf which must hereafter divide the British from the German will take many years to bridge.

the Scientific American (New York) thinke that the evidence points to oblorin, and be farnishes some interesting fac:s regarding the probable metlot of producing the gas on the battle field and of insuring that it shall reach the enemy in a Fufficient degree of concentration to do damage. A formidable attack of this sort on May 24 is described in &r John French's report:7719204

"Some positions in our line cast of Ypres lost yesterday during an enemy gas attack have. yet been recovered. The amount of gas used was greater than on any previona occasion, extending over a front of five miles. The gas was emitted from cylinders during a period of four and a half, houre. At the same time out lipe was bombarded by esphyxiat ing gas-ebelle until the gas-cloud rose at places to a height of fifty- feet from the ground.

"Portions of the line remained intact throughout the ordeal, and our men demonstrated that with dus precautions this form of attack can be successfully met and defeated." diy
