A fine piece of work was so complished by the officers and engineers of the U. M. steamer Heinobi on her way to Taku, when, it was discovered that her propeller shaft was badly fractar- ed. The fracture, which was in the intermediate length, wAN about 18in. long and 5in. desp and occurred when the versa was about twenty-five miles weet of Howki leland. The fractured ebaft

Panama Canal Expenses, A loss of approximately 10 per cent, has been experienced by the government on account of the operation of the Panama canal daring the first eight months. The canal government has just announced that up to March 1 the esrainge of tolis fell short of meet- ing the expenses of operation and maintenance by $261,098.09. From the beginning of the pre- sent fiscal year, on July 1, 1014, to. March 1, 1915, a period of; Bight months, the total ex penditure attributed to operation and maintenance was $2,595,- 613.33. The total earnings of tolls in the period were $2,333,515.24. lo other words, a basiness re quiring the expenditure of $2,595,613,33, the government bas last approximately 10 per cent. It was explained that the operation and maintenance include all the diversified expenditures necessary for keep ing the canal open and in order, and the work of handling vessele through; and to such expendi fures have been added a prorated
