RUSSIAN SUCCESS IN THE BLACK SEA
July 3, 1.30 p.m. Renter's correspondent in Petrograd says that a Russian sub- marine in the Black Sea sank two sleamere and one large abip, all laden with coal, food and supplies. She also wrecked a atramer moored aahore and fought, at the en'rance of the Bosphorus, an armed schooner which was driven inshore,
"THE RUSSO-GERMAN SEE-SAW.
July 3.1.35 p.m. General von Mackensen's army, leading the Austro-German advanos, is moving upon a front of fifty miles between Zimoso and Sokal, facing north-east. The Russiana are avoiding a battle, content ing themselves with rearguard actions and awaiting more favourable ground for a big battle.
General von Mackensen'e dash for the railway at Cholm has apparently failed. He was held up by the stubbornness of the Russians and by the alowness of General Boshmermollis' Austrians on his right, on the Bag and the Gailalips, and of the Archduke Joseph on his left.
That the Rus ians have been fighting in the most spirited manner is evident from the fact that, during the past fofaight, they have captured fifteen thousand prisoners and twenty-one machine guns. Their lossen, sines the River Danajstz was abandoned, have been unusually smell, while the enemy's losses, it is estimated at Petrograd, averaged ten thousand daily,
It is reported in Geneva, from Innsbruck, that superior forces of Austrians surrounded seventy thousand Russians in the neigh- bourhood of Przemyslany. The latter not merely cut their way cat, bat drove the enemy towards Narajiwka, capturing many prisonera
and gune.
It is believed in Petrograd that General von Mackenson bas already begun to send some of his best troops to the western front. Meanwhile the Germans are increasing their forces in the Libau region, where, it is believed, seven army corps are concentrated: At present they are inactive, probably awaiting the development of operations in the couth.
BRIGADIER GENERAL KILLED.
July 3, 1.35 p.m. Brigadier General Scott-Moncrieff and Lieut. Col. O, G. Hill, (Berkshire Regiment) are reported killed.
(General Scott Moncrief was born in 1855. He commanded the Royal Engineers with the Chiua Expeditionary Force in 1900- 01, and was Chief Engineer at Aldershit from 1909 to 1911. He was the author of various military and technical works.)
