Panama v. Suez."
If these were normal times, a comparison between the traflo returns of the Suez and Panama Canala might disclose some inter esting facts respecting competi tion between the two waterways, But the war has upset all calcula tions, and illusory conclusions might easily be drawn from the.. traffic figures. From this it is evident that the number of vessels using the Panama waterway has steadily increased, and that in the months of August and September the volums of traffic through the Suez Canal was seriously affected by the war. There is nothing. however, to indicate any diversion of trade. Better materials for a consideration of this point are afforded by an analysis of the traffic through the Panama Canal for the six monthe of commercial operation ending on March 1, as. prepared by the Canal officials:-

It may be assumed that if any business has been taken from the Suez Canal it is that between United States Atlantic ports and the Far East. This is put at about 12 per cent. of the total Panama cargo traffic for the period in question. The pre- ponderating business, as the figures suggest, is the movement between ports of the United. Statse. Over 41 per cent, of the

trade, which the waterway was certain to develop. Traffic be tween the Pacific coast of North: América and Europe is credited as over 21 per cent, and that be tween the West Coast of South America and the Atlantic sea- board of the United States and Europe as another 21 per cent. In short, although the figures are for a brief period only, and that's period of war, the opening of the Panama Canal is shown to have had almost precisely tha effect which was expected of it, It has brought the Pacifio ses boards of North and South Americ lantic seaboard of the United cs into closer touch with the At- States and with Europe, and has developed the so-called coasting traffic of the United States. It has diverted some, but not much, traffo, with the Far East. The ultimate extent of this diversion is left to be determined when i things settle down some day at the end of the world war.
