alackening off in the amount of Yangtsze Ins. Assoc. Ld........$225 b.j fresh businese was experienced, and during March the quieter tone became more pronounced, partly owing to higher prices in raw cotion and the poor responee to the advanced rates in yarn and cloth by our customers abroad. On 4th January middling Ameri- can cotton on the spot in Liver- pool was at 4.71d. The tendency of prices was against buyers, and on the 19th of that month the quotation was 5.22d, whilst at the close the figure was 6.050 Fiuotuations during February were comparatively small, and of the 27th the rate was 4.91d. upward movement began to show itself early in March, and on the 16th the quotation was, .21d. By the 23rd the price had advanced to 5 35d, and on the 31st the quotation was 5:52d. The higher level of values has been due to

for. next 'Acroogo estimates varying of a decrease from 10 to 50 per cent. The con samption both in America and in Europe during the Inst few months has been larger than ex- peated. There have been advices of unfavourable weather in cer- tain parts of the belt, which has delayed planting. Then ant ther factor which has helped to sue tain values has been optimistic feeling amongst traders acros the water na to the duration of the war. Egyptian cotton is also de.. cidedly dearer than at the begin ning of the year. Fully good fair brown on 4th January was at 6.30d. The quotation on 30th January was 6.50d, whilst by the end of February the rate had nd vanced to 6.80d. During Merch match more activity prevailed in this class of the raw material, there being an increasing demand for the Continent, especially Rus- Bia, in anticipation of an early opening of the Dardanellea. A marked rise in prices cccurred, and on the 31st March, the quota tion was 7 553. According to sta- tistics it Iroks as though the car rent crop in Egypt will turn out to be rather larger than was at one time anticipated, and it is suggested that the Government regulations as to the area under cultivation for the now season will not be rigidly enforced. The buy. ing in piece gcods for export dur. ing the quarter has boen irregu lar. A generally healthy business was done during January for India, especially Calcutta.
