Messrs. Wheelock & Co.'8 report for the fortnight ended May 27 states that there is not quite such a heavy demand for space to Europe at the moment, but tonnage still being so scarce it is difficult in some cases to obtain the necessary allotments, The beginning of Jane should see the first tea-shipments go'ng forward to London but it still

export will be up to the usual standard in the matter of rolame.. Across the Pacific rates are steady, and steamers are getting all the support they went, but the New York via Snez and Panama Con. forence have raised their rates again and they are now 100 per cent, higher all round than Tariff No. 8 which was the опе la force before the war broke out, the last tariff being roughly about 85 per cent, above Tarif No. 8" with a surcharge of 10 per cent. but this has now been dropped in this new tariff. There is no change to report in the Coastwise market since last writing; trade continues brisk.in all directions and steamship owners are able practically to command their own terms for all. enquiries. The next cargo-boats on this berth are as follow:- Marseilles and London, Fushimi Maru (May 30). Nagoys (June 3), aad Hirano Maru (June 13); Marsailles and Liverpool, Perseus (June 2;; London and Liverpool, Netherby Hall (June 18); London, Ningchow (Jane 11); New York via Panama, Middleham Castle "(June 18); New York via Suez, City of Bristol (June 14), S Ronald (June 25) and In- drosa mba (end of June).
Coal,
Messra. Wheelock & Co.'s report for the fortnight ended May 27 states that sithongh the diplo- matic tension between Japan and China has subsided, a strong feel- ing of resentment exists through- out the country against the Japan- ese and with it a certain amount of reluctance on the part of Chinese buyers to buy Japanese gcols. The mark is lagging in consequence, alɗol to which the silk filatures have closed down temporarily for their usual apnual recess; to thero is still less de- mand if any bing. Tae Fushan coal market is still hampered by short supplies and ecarcity of tonnage. Kaiping erat deliveries, are well maintained and stocks only just sufficient, with the markel remaining very firm.
Trade of France. The official returns published in Paris by the Customs At- ministration show that the value - of the imports in the last quarter of the current year was Fre. 1,492,210,000, compared with Fra. 2,292,043,000 in the cor- responding period in 1914. That of the exports was Fra. 084,- 321,000, against Fre. 1,020,- 081,000 last year, the decrease of Fre. 071,700,000 including Tra: 501,170,000 in manufactured articles and Fra. 334,883,000 in materials required for industrial purposes. As in the case of our
#
own trade retorne, the falling-off in the exports is very large, while the self-supporting character of France in the matter of food- stols is reflected in the decresce of Fre. 18,428,000 under that head in the importe,
Leather and Hides, The hide and leather market of Japan somewhat weakened recent ly on account of the congestion of stocks, when an announcement was made on April 20 to the effect that another order for 220,000 pairs of military shoes had been received from Russia. This news stiffened the market and raised. the prices by about Y10, that is, Korean products to Y80, Chinese products to Y65,70, and Vladivo- atok produota to Y80. It was farther confirmed that Russia had prohibited the export of bides. As the demands from Russia are! believed to be of a lasting charac+} ter in view of the stopping of) import from Germany, this line of trade is considered as promis- ing. In the United States a pair of boots coats Y11.50, as against 18.50 in Japan. This circum- stance places the Japanese mana- facturers at an advantage.
