Freight and Tonnage in Japan.

There is still soarcity of steamers in Japan with a conse quent advance in charter money. For Australia and America atcamera have been obtainable at 8. 6d. but the Naikoku Tapun Kaisha has lately paid as much as 10s. The Association of Japanese exporters has presented Mr. Naga. gawa, secretary to the Depart-" ment of Communications with a sintement of what it thinks the Nippon Yusen Kaisha ought to do. First it wishes the N.T.K. to accept linseed and bean cake, back-wheat, oate, barley, bran, timber, fish oil, millet, hemp, azede, and other bulky goode, instead of rejecting them in favour of more profitable cargé. It it cannot be done at present freights, then raten may be in-
