Large Diesel Engine. The largest Diesel engine yet constructed to a deficile order has recently been completed by Salzer Brothers, of Winterthur, Switzerland, and successful tests have been carried out. Motora of high power have been bailt by two firms in Ger" many, but up to the present they have reached only the experi mental stage. The new engine is of the two-oyole, single acting type with six oylinders, and was designed to develop 3,750 b.b.p. at 142 r.p.m, though on trisla a nower of 4,500 b.h.p., or about. 750 b.h.p..per cylinder was main- tained for a long period. It was built for Mezers. Harland and Wolff, of Belfast, and is to be employed in generating electricity for light and power in the shops, although there is a possibility that its installation may lead to a similar type of motor being deve- loped for marine work in this country, Toe cylinder dimer- sions are 750 mm. bore and 1,000 mm. stroke (about 205 in. by 39 4 in.), and in general design the moter is of the marine type, being somewhat similar to the

motor ship Monte Penedo and 850 h.p. engines installed in the.

also to two sets of 1,600 b.h.p. each, built for a British naval tankehip. There are twoscavenge pamps driven directly off the grankshaft, and the scavenging air le admitted to the working ylindera through two sets of ports at the bottom. The main Orta ura opposite the exhaust ports and occopy half the periphery, while the auxiliary scavenging ports are above, the air being admitted to them after the piston has covered the bottom set ja its upward-stroke. For each ylinder there is a valve in the main scavenging pipe controlling the passage of the air to the

Covera are supported by means of steel columns which take the main stresses due to the high pressure, and the oylinders are hung from the covers, being therefore free to expand long- itudinally. Another modification is that the governor of the engine. is arranged to control the air inlet of the air compressor and the time of opening of the fuel valve, as well as the stroke of the fuel pump. By this means the engine. is enabled to run satisfactorily at low powers-Exchange, V American Shipping TrustFinancă, The report, cabied from New York, that the hondholders of the

receivership will come as no surprise. No interest was paid, on the bonds last October, and it is understood that payment was not to be expected in April, Com- mittees have been sitting and, as pointed out their recommendation of a reorganies- tion scheme is likely to be forth coming early this month. The finance of the combine"

topheavy, and though the concern was able to straggle along in fine weather, the squally mouths eince August have found out its weakness and shown the need for a reconstruc lion. The International Mercan- tile Marine" is a holding com. pany, and the shipping lines in which it is interested are not among those which have bene- fited from the war. They are |passenger lines and passenger earnings have been very far below the normal. The future of the American" combine is import ant, because it happens to hold all the shares in the While Star one of the most famous of all British lines which during the war has been contributing vessels.
