Rising Freights,

The Nippon Yusen Kaisha, which lately increased its freights on the Bombay ran, gave notice cutlast week of on increase on the Calcutta line from July 20 next. Glassware and general cargo now charged at Y,5 and Y ôn tón respectively, will be increased to Y. end Y 8. When the rates on the Bombay run were increased hippers complained of the short notice given. To prevent similar complaints again arising three months notice has now been given. Exporters, saya the Mianichi, are much perturbed nt this prospective increase, stet ing that the shippere in the. Ladian trade do not make enough profits to admit of this tax on it, and think that, however good the company's reasons, an increase of freights by Y2 a ton is a selfsh not, considering that the old rate had been bringing a reasonable return. The NY.K. is accordingly exhorted to show its patriotism and if necessary make a sacrifios in order to take advantage of this rare opportunity for promoting exporta.

The Fight for Tonnage in Great Britain.

Hopes of a gradual increase in the number of steamers available for our overseas trade have not been realised, says the Financial Times of recent date. The chief reason, of course, being the continued withdrawal of tonnage for Government purposes." The effect of this is strikingly shown on the great Atlantio trade route, where the number of ships has seriously shrunk and the scarcity of cargo tonnage has now been further accentuated by the re- moval of several m-re vestela from the Liverpool service. This Government requisition of ships" baa forced the companies to come into the market and bid bigh prices for vessels with which to carry on their trade on a reduced scale. The Canard Company has just rechartered five ships on time charter for nine montha Atlantic trade, paying 12s. Od. dead weight. To the shipping trade the great interest of this business is the fact that the Cunard Cont pany has been willing to give what is practically top price for boate of 4,000 to 5,000 gross tons. The vessels include the Tronti and Tropes, both owned locally. | In August this class of boat could have been chartered at Ja, a top, and it is believed that the Cunard lost paid 38. less for the boate it is now continuing. supposed to be obtainable from the current high rates of freight. The risks that time charterers can are serious, owing to the general bold up of shipping at preotically every port. In Liver pool the congestion is as bad ag ever; no fewer than fifty-seven boats were awaiting discharge recently. A number of these Vessels are on time charter, and the delay in freeing them is coal- ing the charterers anything from $100 to $120 per day, with a prospect of a fortnight or three weeks' idleness. The quays at the docks are likewise congested with transit gcode, and the railway yerde are blocked. Shippers are fighting for tonnege, and instead of the rise in freights deterring them, they are offering shipownera even more money if a guarantee of shipment can be secured. There is a big volume of traffic offe in this way to the French where the congestion ja muoh worae
