Rise in the Price of Ten. In the course of an article deal ing with the abacimal rise in the price of tes in the Times of recent date, the writer says:—The crux of the whole matter now, there fore, is whether the rate of cop sumption bas advanced to such s degree as to cause the great dealers to be apprehensive regard- ing a fotore shortage of their available stocks. If there has been no such sensations? advance then) thera a n be no justification what ever of this putting up of prices except the mercenary one of the desire to rake in sa few - ruore shekela into pockets already.com- fortably fall. The article con clusively shows that the dealer cannot justify himself from the point of view of a higher rate of Union Ins. Society of Cton, Ld.$855 consumption. In 1914 the tutsi deliveries for home consumption gave a monthly average of 28, 500,000 lb., and the result of the increaved duty was to reduce cor- sumption in December and January last by about 3,300,000 lb. "Atsuming, the writer con- tinues, “that these represent a normal condition of things, il would be enfe to calculate on a home consumption of 26,000,000 lb. a month for 1915." Adding to this the quantity exported, again based on the figures of 1914, a total of 32,000,000 lb. per.: month would boarrived at, or 158,000,000 15. for the four months ladia is ent of count. Now, it has already been shown that the atcoks is hand would be about 200,000,000 | Ib., so that the merobants would have rome 70,000,000 lb. Wilb which to cover risks. Last month, however, the quantity on which duty
payments were i made. amounted to 27.800,000 18., against 22,600,000 lb. in the previous year, and the only cor- clusion is that the chief distribu tors are speculating on a father advance in the duty, and in their efforts to make a prifit out of the necessities of their country they are taxing consumers in a manter quite uncalled for.

Flour Industry in Japan. H. M. Commercial At aoe st Yokohama (Mr. E. F: Orowe, CM.G.,) reports that the fer milling industry in Jaçan haa developed remarkably of late years, and the fact that the flour now imported is principally cor. fined to the first grade shows that second grade goods can now be produced in Japan, The produc tion of wheat flour in Japan in: the years 1911, 1912 and 1913 amounted to Y.26,398,205 Y28,... 827 612 and Y32,604,146 respec tively, or expresad" in British valnes, to about £2,502,500, $2,842,800 and £3,337,500 19 spectively. Along with the development of the milling in- dustry, the demand for wheat has been greatly stimulated and, according to the latest estimate, the annual consumption of wheat is 2,600,000 koku (12,896 000. bushele), of which some 400,000 koku (1,084,000 bushels) is im ported, mainly from the United States. The imporis of wheat] flour 1911, 1912 and 1913 amounted to Y.1,702 901, Y.1: 722,140 and Y1,780,005 respeo tively, or, expressed in British values, to about £173,800, £175, 800 and $181,710 respectively. The export of Japanese wheat flour is not very large, the value for 1913 amounting only to about Y. 3,400 (about £317), but a drawback of 70 von (about le,51) of the import duty of 77 sen (about 1o. 7d.) per hundred kin (about 1324 lb.) of wheat being now allowed on the export of wheat flour made from imported material, the exports are thought to be likely to iñoresse.
The Tinplate Industry. Some attention has lately been drawn to suggestions regarding another use for tin. American reports sinte that a committee of the National Coffee Roasters' Association, which has been studying the best kind of con tainer for coffee sold in retil quantities, recommends the use of tin and tinfoil, as the ordinary parchment paper bags do not re- tain the aromatic oils so well, so that in warm, humid weather, when exposed to air, a very Ber ione deterioration in the strength and flavour of both bean and ground coffee 18 Canised. Come interesting figures are given to confirm these conclusions; and it is thought that as's result tinfoil, artinplate, may come into use for this important frade:
