Shanghat Trade. Mesra, Ilbert and Co.'s piece Goods Market Report says
The market has been features Jess during the week owing in part to the recent heavy rain and consequent difficulties in moving, cargo throughout the Yargleze valley, and partly to the dnretrl- ing effect which the controversy between China and Japan cop- tinues to exercise amongst the patives, The undertone appears to be quite healthy, however, ne clearances are well maintained and the auction sales show an improving tendency on the whole, more especially for Fast Blacks. which have ruled firm through- cut. It is estiafactory to note that Newohwang, which has long been more or less inert as far as this market is concerned, bag re- sumed clearances upon a'mcderate scale,

Natural. Indigo, The ·M nchester
Guardian states that the Government scheme for the purchase of catural indigo is proving successful. The supply of natural indigo comes chiefy. from India. In the year 1914 we imported 5,312ewt: valued at 8181,635, as against 4,174ew. valued at £54,739 in 1913, and 7,0730wt, valued at £98,676 in 1912. The import for the last month of the year was 2,175owt, valued at 8106,901; in January 4,506cm, valued at £281,213;| and in February 8,854ont, valued at £381,355, Wo have thus got 11,450oat, already this year-lar more than we usually take in a year, and the value has been no less than £842,571. This is a striking indication of the great rise there has been in prices through the absence of the competition of the German synthetic product. It will be interesting to add "official import "igures in reference to coal tar dyes, as showing the quantities we require at ordinary times. In 1913 we imported 60,813 awt. of alizarine and an thracene dyestuffs, 183,027 ont of aniline and napthalene dye-. staffs, 23,880 ct. of synthetio indigo, and 155omt. of other kinds. In 1914, when these sup plies were out off for several monthe, our imports were as fol- #fowe :--Al`zərine and anthracene dyestuff 31,220ows., aniline, and naphthalene dyestuffa 192.389 Owt., synthetic indigo 15,510. owt, other coal tar dyestuffe 19cwt.!
