LOG BOOK.

German Shipping Losses,

The Hamburg-Amerika and ita- allied lines, the Hamburg Bre men Afrika, together with their rivals, the Norddeutscher Lloyd, are rot publishing any balance ebeet this year, by grace of the authorities; so that the two most interesting financial statements are to be withheld from British Borutiny, for the time being at any rate. Presumably we shall also bear of other lines aonnected with Herr Ballin's administration, such as the Weermann and Kos mos concerns, although curiously enough the Hanaa Line and the Hamburg South American Com pany have published their a counts. Quite a number of German shipping companies have published their balance-sheets and with the exception of one cr two concerns which have been able to obtain a fairly lucrative business in the Baltic they nearly all speak of three outstanding features conteo'ed with last year's trading. The early part of the year opened with a depression in freight rates; this improved dar ing the summer with brighter prospects and then, the war, How they have fared is shown in the following table:-

Generally speaking, the reports contain, despite the negative character of the results, a note of optimista. It is not that the companies hope to start trad- ing shortly." The period is that indefinite time when the war is over." For this, the share holders are told, the companies ara putting strong reserves, soÓ that as soon se peace is declarad they will send out their fleets rejuvenated and well found com-

pared with the war-worn British merobantmen to captare the world's carrying trade. As for vessels captured by the Allies, this point is always anawered by the number of new vessels for which they contracted within the last twelve months or eu, although the Hamburg South American Co. oan hardly feel pleased with threa new 20,000-ton liners waiting since the end of the year to make their maiden voyages on a sadly depleted passenger market. The Oldenburg Company announcea the removal of its hoadquartera to Hamburg as one step towards seizing the opportunities the end of the war will afford. The Hanes Company made a net profit of about £87,280 last year com pared with $439,530 in 1913, and talks of a reserve fund of about a million pounds, but does not gày in what this reserve is invested Meanwhile the sile work of the British Navy is eloquently told in the above table:

Steamship Company's Patriotic.

Grant.

The directora of Tarness, Witby, and Co. (Limited) have decided to set aside out of their profite the sum of £10,000 for division among the masters, officers, and engineera of their own steamera and the steamera: under their direct control and management, to be divided by the board, in their discretion at the end of the war, as a recogni tion, over and above the increase of Wages granted, of the extra strain and vigilance necessary in consequence of are the war. Tae allowance will only he made for continuous service, bat will not be prejudiced by any ill. ness or by any of the cfficers leaving to join his Majesty'a Forces,
