The Mishap to the Karama, Australian newspapera coutsin an account of the inquiry held at Brisbane, by the Shipping Inspec tor, into the mishap to the steamer Karema, which oroke her tail shaft, and was towed back to port by the steamer Barwah.

Captain John MoMillan, mseter of the Karoms, stated that the breakdown occurred at 5.43 p.m. on January 30. The Bins Funnel steamer Idomeneus was seen com- ing up astern, distant about four miles, and the Karema hoisted the signal signifying "I want aBeistance; please remain by me." The Idomeneus replied by hoist» ing her ensign, she seemed to have stopped her engines, and turned round towards the Aarema. At 6 p.m. the Karema hoisted the signal which signified "Ship [ disabled; will you tow me?” and repeatedly blow her steam whistle to attract the other ship'a atten- tion, The idomenens failed to. answer the urgent signals, and at 6.15 p.m. a rooket was let off.- Some minutes later reveral de- sonatora were exploded. Tae. weather was fine and clear, No notice was taken by the Idomeneas of the signals." At 7 p.m. a wirevi leau message was despatched to Brisbane for assistance. At 8.30 the steamer Barwah was sighted, and agreed to tow the Karema to a safe anchorage in Moreton Bay, The chief and second officers. corroborated this evidence.
